D.I.Y. natural vegan deodorant
With only 4 simple ingredients you can make a simple, effective, zero waste and natural vegan deodorant that leaves you feeling fresh without the toxins and irritants in commercial deodorants.
But first, why make your own deodorant?
Commercial deodorants, with their enticing fragrances and convenient packaging, have become a staple in most people's daily routines. However, while they may keep us feeling fresh, there are some alarming problems associated with these conventional products. In this blog post, we'll explore the pitfalls of commercial deodorants and why natural alternatives might be a healthier choice.
Ingredients of Concern
One of the primary issues with commercial deodorants lies in their ingredient lists. Many of these products contain a cocktail of synthetic chemicals, some of which can be harmful to your health. Some common problematic ingredients include:
Aluminum Compounds: These are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants, working by blocking sweat ducts. However, concerns have been raised about their potential links to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
Parabens: These synthetic preservatives are used to extend a product's shelf life but are known to disrupt hormonal balance and have been detected in breast cancer tumors.
Phthalates: Often hidden under the term "fragrance," phthalates can disrupt the endocrine system and have been linked to reproductive issues and developmental problems.
Propylene Glycol: This chemical can cause skin irritation and has been associated with allergies and contact dermatitis.
Environmental Concerns
The impact of commercial deodorants isn't limited to personal health; it also extends to the environment. Many deodorant containers are made from plastic that can take centuries to decompose, contributing to the growing problem of plastic pollution. Additionally, the manufacturing processes and transportation of these products contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
Ineffectiveness Over Time
Some users find that commercial deodorants become less effective over time. This can be due to a variety of factors, including the body's adaptation to the product and the build-up of toxins on the skin. When commercial deodorants fail to work as intended, individuals may resort to using more product, which only exacerbates the issues mentioned earlier.
Natural Alternatives: A Breath of Fresh Air
Given the problems associated with commercial deodorants, many people are turning to natural alternatives. These products often rely on organic ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils to provide effective odor control without the drawbacks of synthetic chemicals. They are also frequently packaged in eco-friendly containers, reducing their environmental impact.
We can take this one step further and create our own natural easy deodorant with simple household ingredients. Our skin is our largest organ, and where we put deodorant is right by our lymph nodes, so we want to be cognizant of the ingredients we slather onto this area.
In just a few simple steps you can have some easy, cheap, and effective deodorant without the harsh chemicals, plastic packages and hefty pricetag.
What’s in it, and Why?
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has gained popularity as a versatile and natural skincare product, and it is often praised for its numerous benefits for the skin. Here are some of the key advantages of using coconut oil on the skin:
Moisturization: Coconut oil is an excellent natural moisturizer. It contains fatty acids, particularly lauric acid, which helps to lock in moisture and prevent dryness. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals with dry or sensitive skin.
Skin barrier protection: The fatty acids in coconut oil form a protective barrier on the skin, which can help shield it from environmental pollutants, dirt, and other impurities. This can be especially useful for those living in urban areas with high pollution levels.
Anti-inflammatory properties: Coconut oil contains anti-inflammatory properties
The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil have antimicrobial properties that can help protect against harmful microorganisms.
This is especially important for skin health, as many types of skin infections, including acne, cellulitis, folliculitis and athlete’s foot, are caused by bacteria or fungi , applying coconut oil directly to the skin may prevent the growth of these microorganisms, this is due to its lauric acid content, which makes up nearly 50% of the fatty acids in coconut oil and can fight harmful microorganisms.
(One study tested the antibacterial properties of 30 types of fatty acids against 20 different strains of bacteria. Lauric acid was found to be the most effective at blocking the growth of bacteria)
Moisturization: Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer that can help keep the skin hydrated. It contains fatty acids, including lauric acid, which can penetrate the skin and lock in moisture, making it a suitable option for dry or dehydrated skin.
Antioxidant Properties: Coconut oil contains antioxidants such as vitamin E, which can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. This may slow down the aging process and promote healthier, more youthful-looking skin.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects: The lauric acid in coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for soothing skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. It may help reduce redness and itching associated with these conditions.
A note:
It's essential to choose high-quality, virgin or extra-virgin coconut oil that is free from additives or fragrances when using it on your skin.
Baking Soda
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a common household ingredient that has a range of potential benefits for the skin when used thoughtfully and in moderation. However, it's essential to use baking soda with care as it may not be suitable for all skin types. Here are some potential benefits of baking soda for the skin:
Exfoliation:
Baking soda has mild abrasive properties that can help in exfoliating the skin. When used as a gentle scrub, it can remove dead skin cells, dirt, and excess oil, leaving your skin looking fresher and smoother.
Acne and Blemish Control:
Baking soda's natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties may help in treating acne and reducing the appearance of blemishes. It can help unclog pores and reduce the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
Balancing pH Levels:
Baking soda is slightly alkaline, which can help balance the skin's pH levels. This can be beneficial for individuals with overly acidic or imbalanced skin, as it can potentially reduce redness and irritation.
Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot powder, derived from the roots of the arrowroot plant (Maranta arundinacea), is a versatile natural ingredient that offers several benefits when used in skincare. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and beauty practices for its gentle and soothing properties. Here are some of the key benefits of arrowroot powder for your skin:

In skincare products, arrowroot powder can act as a natural thickening agent. It helps create creamy and luxurious textures in lotions, creams, and DIY skincare formulations without the need for synthetic thickeners.
Soothes Irritated Skin:
Arrowroot powder has a calming and soothing effect on the skin. It can help alleviate irritation, itching, and redness, making it suitable for those with sensitive or irritated skin conditions, such as sunburn or rashes.
Enhances Skin's Softness:
When used in skincare products or as a standalone ingredient in homemade masks or scrubs, arrowroot powder can help improve the skin's texture. It leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth.
Promotes Dryness:
Arrowroot powder can be applied to areas of the body that are prone to excess moisture, such as the underarms, feet, or groin. It helps keep these areas dry
Grapefruit Oil
Grapefruit oil is a versatile essential oil derived from the peel of the grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) through a process known as cold-press extraction. This fragrant oil offers a wide range of potential benefits, both for your physical and emotional well-being. Here are some of the key advantages of grapefruit oil:
Aromatherapy and Mood Enhancement:
Uplifting and Energizing: The invigorating scent of grapefruit oil is known to help boost mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Inhaling the aroma can promote a sense of vitality and positivity.
Skin Care:
Antioxidant Properties: Grapefruit oil contains antioxidants, such as vitamin C, which can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals.
Antimicrobial Effects: Grapefruit oil has shown antimicrobial properties, which can help combat harmful bacteria and viruses.
Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties:
Cellular Health: The antioxidants in grapefruit oil may contribute to overall cellular health and protect against oxidative stress, which is linked to various chronic diseases.
-It's important to note that grapefruit oil should be used with caution, especially when applied topically. It can be photosensitive, meaning it may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase the risk of sunburn. Therefore, avoid direct sun exposure after topical application. Additionally, always dilute grapefruit oil with a carrier oil before applying it to your skin to prevent irritation.
-As with any essential oil, individual reactions may vary, so it's a good practice to perform a patch test before using grapefruit oil extensively. If you have any medical conditions or are pregnant or nursing, consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating grapefruit oil into your wellness routine.
